Freshman goalkeeper Samantha Merklin (Effort, Pa. / Pleasant Valley) made a career-high eight saves, but Bloomsburg University's first-half goal proved to be the different as they stole a 1-0 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division match on Wednesday, Aug. 31 at the MU Soccer Field.
The Huskies (3-0, 1-0 PSAC East) scored the game's lone goal in the 25th minute of the first half when Paige Harris beat the keeper right off a lead pass from Ellie Rowe.
Merklin and the Mountaineer (1-1, 0-1 PSAC East) back line were strong for the full 90 minutes, fighting off a relentless Huskies' attack that fired off 20 shots (nine on goal). Sophomore Katelyn Rueppel (Myerstown, Pa. / Eastern Lebanon County) led the Mounties with two shots.
Riley Springler earned the victory in net for the Huskies.
The Mounties host East Stroudsburg University on Saturday, Sept. 3 at 1 p.m. at the MU Soccer Field.
