Warriors outduel Mounties, 2-1

Sophomore Katelyn Rueppel (Myerstown, Pa. / Eastern Lebanon County) scored her second goal of the season to lead the Mansfield University women's soccer team, but East Stroudsburg University scored a goal in each half to steal the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division match, 2-1 on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 3.

The Mounties fall to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in conference, while the Warriors improve to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the East.

The Warriors built a 2-0 lead thanks to a pair of goals in the opening 10 minutes of each half.

However, Rueppel cut the deficit in half when she fired a free kick from 35 yards out that ricochet off a defender and found the lower-right 90 of the goal.

The Mounties controlled possession for the remainder of the half, but could not connect for the equalizer.

Rueppel and junior Emily Smith each led the Mountie offense with two shots on goal.

Freshman Samantha Merklin (Effort, Pa. / Pleasant Valley) made a game-high 10 saves for the second straight game for MU, while Emmy Clarkson earned the win in net for ESU, making seven stops.

Abby James and Mikayla Moats scored the goals for the Warriors.

The Mounties are back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 7 at 7 p.m. when they travel to Lock Haven University for a midweek PSAC East match.
