Deadline approaches for Pennsylvania's property tax/rent rebate program

Rep. Martin Causer has issued a reminder to older adults and Pennsylvanians with disabilities about the approaching deadline for the 2023 Property Tax/Rent Rebate program. Applicants have until December 31 to submit their applications.

"We significantly expanded eligibility for the program this year, and increased the maximum rebate," Causer stated. "I encourage anyone who qualifies or thinks they may qualify to contact our offices for free assistance with filing for the benefit."

The program is designed to aid eligible residents aged 65 and older, widows and widowers aged 50 and older, and individuals with disabilities aged 18 and older. This year, income limits have been raised to $45,000 for both homeowners and renters, while the maximum rebate has increased to $1,000. Applicants should exclude 50% of Social Security when calculating their income.

To process claims, applicants must provide specific documentation:

- Renters need a 2023 PA Rent Certificate completed by their landlord or a statement from HUD office; proof of income such as Social Security/Disability Form 1099, employment W-2, Pension/Retirement Form 1099, Interest/Dividends Form 1099; and a driver’s license or photo ID. Additional documents like a death certificate or life lease may be required.

- Homeowners must present proof of paid property taxes for 2023 to their county, municipality, and school district; proof of income similar to that required for renters; and a driver’s license or photo ID. Some may also need additional documents like a death certificate or deed.

Applicants opting for direct deposit should bring a check with account details; otherwise, rebates will be issued via paper checks.

For assistance with applications, individuals can visit any of Causer's offices located in Bradford (78 Main St., first floor), Coudersport (279 Route 6 West, Office 2), or Kane (54 N. Fraley St., Suite 2). More information can be obtained by contacting Patricia A. Hippler at phippler@pahousegop.com.
