A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Tioga County Election Department on February 5, 2025. The request, made by Northern Tier News, a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, seeks information about the candidates running in the upcoming election.
Specifically, Northern Tier News has requested an electronic list of all candidates that are running for office in the forthcoming election. The details requested include each candidate's first, middle and last name; the office they are running for; the jurisdiction of that office; and their party affiliation.
In addition to these basic details about each candidate's campaign, Northern Tier News also asked for contact information for each candidate. This includes their address, phone number, and email address.
As a media organization, Northern Tier News stressed the importance of access to public records in fulfilling its professional responsibilities. These responsibilities include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public. In light of this role in disseminating information, Northern Tier News believes it is eligible for a fee waiver as a media professional.
The Tioga County Election Department has yet to respond to this request.
