Reps. Clint Owlett and Tina Pickett are urging customers of Frontier Communications and Verizon Communications to participate in an upcoming public input hearing regarding the proposed merger of the two companies. The Public Utility Commission (PUC) is scheduled to hold an in-person hearing on February 13 at 6 p.m. at the Wellsboro Fire Company.
"Unlike many areas of the state, rural Pennsylvanians cannot assume quality, reliable internet and telephone service will be available to them, and that is especially true for customers of Frontier Communications," stated Owlett. "With this merger under review, we have another opportunity to make our case for the kind of service we need and deserve."
Pickett expressed similar concerns: "I have heard from so many parents, families, and business owners over the years who have struggled with slow or no internet, extended telephone outages, delayed repairs and more. We deserve better, and it’s important the PUC knows our needs as it reviews the terms of this proposed merger."
The representatives stressed that it's crucial for residents to communicate their expectations about services provided, infrastructure maintenance, repair timelines, and customer service accessibility during these hearings.
For those unable to attend the Wellsboro session in person, two telephonic hearings are set for February 20 at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m., which can be accessed by calling toll-free at 866-759-6860 using PIN Number: 71568747. Additionally, another in-person hearing is tentatively planned for March 11 in Tunkhannock.
While registration to speak at these hearings is encouraged but not mandatory, individuals can pre-register by contacting the Office of Administrative Law Judge via phone or email. Required information includes name, contact details, preferred hearing date/time, and interpreter needs if applicable.
Frontier and Verizon announced last fall their intention for Verizon to acquire all Frontier assets nationwide in a deal valued around $20 billion. For completion of this acquisition, approvals are required from both federal authorities like the Federal Communications Commission as well as state-level bodies such as Pennsylvania's PUC.
