A new state law aimed at facilitating the removal of squatters from properties has gained support from Representative Tina Pickett (R-Bradford/Wyoming). The legislation passed unanimously in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives earlier this month.

“I have heard from many residents about their concerns regarding squatters,” said Pickett. “I believe this new law will go a long way in protecting the rights of lawful property owners, rather than protecting criminals who would break the law and create chaos in our communities.”

The legislation, known as Act 88 of 2024, aims to provide clarity for homeowners, landlords, and law enforcement officers dealing with squatters by codifying existing case law on the issue.

Squatters unlawfully occupying homes pose a threat to community stability and security across the nation. This new law seeks to clarify their legal status in Pennsylvania and simplify the process for removing them from residential properties.

Previously, property owners faced challenges reclaiming their properties due to requirements such as issuing a "notice to quit" to individuals without legitimate claims. This often resulted in financial and emotional burdens for property owners.

The act is set to take effect in mid-September.
