More retirees in Pennsylvania will soon be eligible for a reduced vehicle registration fee due to a new state law. The change, effective Sunday, Dec. 15, was announced by Rep. Martin Causer (R-Cameron/McKean/Potter).

The updated regulation increases the income eligibility limit for retired individuals to $29,906, up from the previous threshold by over $10,000. Eligible retirees will pay an $11 processing fee annually instead of the standard $45 registration fee.

Rep. Causer expressed his support for the law: “As many retirees deal with rising costs on a fixed income, this program provides a bit of relief to those who need it,” he said. “I was pleased to support the law making this change and encourage retirees to take advantage of the benefit.”

To qualify for the reduced fee, applicants must be retired and receiving Social Security or other pension payments. Notably, 100% of veterans’ benefits or payments to an unmarried surviving spouse after a veteran's death are excluded from income calculations.

Applicants must be listed as owners on their vehicle’s registration and can register only one vehicle at the reduced rate. Eligible vehicles include passenger cars or trucks with a registered gross weight not exceeding 9,000 pounds.

For further details and application forms, individuals can visit relevant websites or contact Rep. Causer’s offices located in Bradford, Coudersport, or Kane.
