Rep. Martin Causer has expressed his concerns regarding Governor Josh Shapiro's proposed state budget of $51.47 billion, presented before a joint session of the General Assembly. Causer criticized the budget for potentially depleting surplus funds and tapping into the Rainy Day Fund while relying on new taxes, including those on marijuana and skill games.
“To say I find the governor’s proposed spending amount alarming would be an understatement,” said Causer. He emphasized that the plan is unsustainable as it aims to spend more than what is brought in through revenue.
Causer suggested focusing on funding essential government functions such as education, rural health care, public safety, and emergency services rather than expanding government size and costs during challenging economic times for families and businesses.
Acknowledging rising costs, he advocated for economic growth without additional taxpayer burdens. “We must be focused on growing our economy, and growing our energy industry would be a great place to start,” he stated.
The representative noted that this marks only the beginning of the state budget process. He assured continued advocacy for a budget addressing rural community needs while respecting taxpayers.
In the coming weeks, Appropriations committees from both legislative houses will conduct hearings with state agencies to scrutinize Governor Shapiro's plan details. This information will guide them in formulating a final spending plan by June 30.
