Rep. Martin Causer has expressed his concerns regarding Governor Josh Shapiro's proposed $51.47 billion state budget, presented to the General Assembly. In a statement, Causer described the spending amount as "alarming" and warned that it could deplete the state's surplus funds and require tapping into the Rainy Day Fund.

Causer criticized the plan for relying on new taxes from sources such as marijuana and skill games, stating, "The governor again wants to spend more than we bring in. It is simply not sustainable." He emphasized the need to focus on funding core government functions like education, rural health care, public safety, and emergency services without increasing government size or cost.

Acknowledging rising costs, Causer suggested economic growth as a solution rather than burdening taxpayers further. He pointed out Pennsylvania's potential in expanding its energy industry by reducing governmental obstacles: "While Pennsylvania is already an energy powerhouse, we have the potential to be so much more if we can get government out of the way."

As part of the budget process, Appropriations committees in both legislative chambers will hold hearings with state agencies to examine details of Shapiro's proposal. The information gathered will aid in crafting a final spending plan due by June 30.
