Working to improve health care access in rural communities, Representative Martin Causer has joined a majority in the Pennsylvania House to approve a new bill. The legislation aims to establish a grant program designed to enhance the recruitment of health care providers in these areas.
"People in rural communities deserve access to quality health care without having to travel for hours to get it. It’s not just a matter of convenience but public safety," stated Causer. He emphasized the difficulties hospitals face in recruiting physicians and other professionals, highlighting the proposed grant program as a potential solution.
The Rural Health Care Grant Program would offer funding to health care entities located in medically underserved or rural counties. This financial support would be used specifically for covering the education debt of practitioners employed by these entities.
To qualify for this grant funding, practitioners must commit to working full-time for at least three years with the entity distributing the grant and must start their employment within six months after accepting a position.
Causer expressed appreciation for his colleague, House Republican Health Committee Chair Kathy Rapp, who authored and advocated for this legislation focusing on rural health care.
The bill will now proceed to the Senate for further consideration.
