Rep. Clint Owlett (R-Tioga/Bradford) is urging residents in flood-affected areas of Tioga County to be cautious of individuals posing as representatives from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). These individuals are reportedly attempting to collect personal information, including Social Security and bank account numbers.
"My office was contacted this morning about this, and we verified with both FEMA and the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency (PEMA) that they DO NOT and WILL NOT have people walking around gathering that sort of personal information," Owlett stated. "Please be vigilant to protect yourself and be sure to help spread the word to your friends and neighbors."
Owlett advised anyone who may have provided their personal information to a scammer to contact their financial institution immediately. He also urged residents to report the scam to local or state police with as much descriptive information about the person or people involved.
"We will not stand by and let these despicable opportunists take advantage of people who are already struggling because of the impacts of last month’s flooding," Owlett said.
